Career planner questions

Is this career planner free?

Explore career options with the Career Planner and use the free CV checker to strengthen your application.

Can I use the career planner if I have never had a job?

Yes. Choose “I’m looking for my first job”. Start with your strengths and preferences; examples from education, volunteering, caring and hobbies can help you recognise skills. Each suggested role includes preparation guidance and training to check. Missing course information does not mean a role has no entry requirements. Our first CV guide explains how to describe experience outside paid work.

How does ApplyWell choose career options?

The planner uses ApplyWell’s structured role, skill and training data with the answers you provide. It compares possible routes and identifies areas to investigate. It is not a personality diagnosis, a professional assessment of your competence or a promise of employment. Ask ApplyWell explains the plan; the chat does not decide the underlying career match. Check the duties and entry requirements before committing to a route. Read about ApplyWell and our skills gap guide.

How do I plan a move from warehouse work into a team leader role?

Select Warehouse Operative as your current role and Team Leader as your target. Add the strengths you can evidence and your pay goal. Your plan highlights the skills to build, possible progression steps and checks to make against local vacancies. Start with our career progression guide.

What does my career score mean?

The score compares modelled skill levels for your current and target roles, including your selected strengths. It is not an assessment of your actual competence or a percentage chance of getting a job. Qualifications, pay and working preferences are checked separately. Use our skills gap guide to test the assumptions.

Can I explore a different career without knowing my target job?

Yes. Leave the target role on “No — help me choose a job”. The quick matcher combines your preferences and transferable skills with an AI-assisted check against current UK career information, then suggests realistic jobs to explore. You can then choose a specific target and build again. Read what job should I do next? for help narrowing your options.

Should I enter my hourly pay or annual salary?

Use annual pay before tax. For regular hours, multiply your hourly rate by your contracted weekly hours and paid weeks per year. Exclude uncertain overtime or bonuses. You can leave pay blank and still get a plan. The quick amount buttons can help, or you can type an exact yearly figure.

Do I need to pay for a training course?

Not necessarily. Workplace practice, shadowing and free learning may close a skills gap. Check actual vacancy requirements before buying a course. Suggestions explain their connection to your target or a missing skill; they do not confirm eligibility, accreditation or employment. Use the training explorer to compare requirements and costs.

Does a qualification or CSCS card guarantee I can do the job?

No. Employers may require a particular qualification, card category, current licence, practical assessment or experience. Select your broad qualification position, then compare your evidence with the actual job requirements. Our training guidance helps you identify the questions to ask.

How is the career planner different from the CV checker?

The planner helps you decide on a direction using your career profile. The free CV checker checks how well your CV presents evidence for a role. Your plan includes a link with your target already selected, so you can move from planning to improving your application.

Can I save my Career Plan?

Yes. Sign in to keep completed Career Plans in your ApplyWell account so you can return to them, compare routes and track your next actions. Read the privacy notice for how account data is handled.

Will this plan guarantee my salary goal?

No. Salary ranges are indicative and depend on hours, location, employer and experience. The planner flags goals above the target role’s listed range, but being inside a range is not an offer. Compare real vacancies and read our salary progression guide.

More questions about your next move

How do I move from warehouse work into supervision?

Compare Warehouse Team Leader with your current role, then build evidence of safe handovers, work allocation and coaching. Use our warehouse progression guide to compare leadership with stock-control work.

Does the planner treat all hospitality work as the same role?

No. Choose the role closest to your duties, such as waiter, barista, kitchen assistant or hotel receptionist. Our hospitality guide helps you choose the right starting point.

What if I want a better job without becoming a manager?

Compare specialist routes as well as management. Stock control, specialist support or coordination may fit different strengths. Explore the progression guides and check what employers actually require.

Should I pay for a course before applying?

First identify a specific requirement you cannot yet demonstrate. Check whether the employer provides training, whether practical assessment is required and what the full price includes. Read our training checklist before booking.

How should I enter part-time or term-time pay?

Use your actual annual pay before tax and compare roles with similar hours. A full-time-equivalent salary may be higher than what a part-time or term-time contract pays. The teaching assistant guide explains why this matters.

Can a career score confirm my qualifications?

No. It is a comparison of assumed skills, not verification of qualifications or eligibility. Regulated and safety-critical tasks require separate checks. See the care and construction guides for examples.
