How to Do a Skills Gap Analysis Before You Pay for Training

Training is most useful after you know the gap. A skills gap analysis compares what the target role needs with what you can already prove, then ranks the missing capabilities by importance.

Use the plan, then validate it: career routes and salary bands are starting points. Check current vacancies and required qualifications before making a major decision or paying for training.

Start with several real vacancies

One job advert can be unusually specific. Review a small group of similar current vacancies and note the skills, systems, qualifications and responsibilities that recur.

Mark what you can already prove

For each requirement, ask whether you have a real example. Evidence from work, volunteering, projects or other responsibilities can count if it genuinely demonstrates the skill.

Separate knowledge gaps from experience gaps

A knowledge gap may be suitable for a course. An experience gap often needs practice, shadowing, a project, volunteering or a stepping-stone role. Buying a course does not automatically solve an experience gap.

Rank the gaps by hiring importance

Prioritise requirements that appear repeatedly and are central to the job. Do not spend weeks learning a nice-to-have skill while ignoring the capability employers use to screen candidates.

Choose training that produces usable evidence

Prefer learning that lets you practise: exercises, projects, simulations or recognised assessments where relevant. Then look for a way to apply the skill in a real or realistic context.

Update your CV only after you can defend the claim

A course title can sit in training or qualifications, but do not upgrade yourself to “advanced” in a skill unless you can explain how you have actually used it.

Common questions

Do employers care about online courses?

They can help show initiative and knowledge, but the value depends on the role, provider and whether you can demonstrate practical application.

Should I pay for a qualification before applying?

Only when vacancies repeatedly require it or it materially improves your credibility. Check the job market first.
