Guidance, not a qualification or eligibility decision. Check current official requirements, provider terms and employer expectations before booking.

Choose the licence for the work

Look at the vehicles and duties in real vacancies. Confirm the appropriate category before comparing training packages. The official Great Britain route includes eligibility and entitlement requirements; Northern Ireland has its own guidance. Tell a provider what licence you currently hold so it can identify the correct next steps.

Initial and periodic CPC are different

For new professional drivers, the required initial qualifications and tests are different from periodic CPC training for qualified drivers. A periodic course is not a shortcut to your first HGV licence. Returning drivers should check the official route that applies to their existing entitlement and CPC history.

Make the quote itemised

Compare medical and provisional-licence stages, theory tests, practical tuition, driving tests and any initial CPC requirements. Ask whether vehicle hire and resits are included. A practical-only package and a complete starter package cannot be compared simply by their headline prices. Keep VAT and optional extras visible in your budget.

Allow for more than driving lessons

The total journey may include administration and test availability as well as learning. Ask for a realistic schedule rather than assuming the advertised practical course length is the entire qualification timeline. Consider transport to the training centre and time away from work. Do not resign from a job solely because a short training date has been offered.

Check funding before committing

Investigate employer support and eligible Skills Bootcamps in England. A provider’s funding enquiry page is not a guarantee of a free place. Ask about residence, eligibility, start dates and any contribution, and obtain confirmation. Avoid paying a non-refundable deposit on the assumption that funding will later cover it.

Prepare the application alongside training

Review shift patterns, geographical coverage and experience expectations. Keep licence and CPC claims precise, and show genuine evidence of reliability, safety and customer contact. Use the HGV role guide and CV checker once your information is accurate. Neither a training place nor a completed course guarantees employment.
