How to Turn Excel Training into Credible CV Evidence
Build a simple Excel practice project, check your work and describe your skills honestly instead of relying on a course certificate alone.
Start with the tasks in vacancies
For office roles, look for the actual spreadsheet work: maintaining records, filtering lists, checking figures or summarising information. Do not assume every administrator needs advanced modelling. Pick the tasks that recur in roles you would realistically apply for and use them to guide your learning.
Use free learning before buying
Microsoft’s Excel guidance covers starting points, formulas and common tasks. Start with the topic you need and practise it. Free learning may still require access to suitable software. Check whether your employer or existing subscription already provides access before buying another course or licence.
Build one small practice project
Create an invented stock list or appointment tracker with no personal data. Add clear headings, sensible formatting and a small set of useful calculations. Practise sorting and filtering without losing row relationships. Keep the project small enough that you can explain every formula and change. A polished template you cannot explain is weak evidence.
Check whether it works
Deliberately introduce a duplicate, blank entry or unexpected value and see whether your checks catch it. Compare a few totals manually. Write a short note explaining the purpose, what you built and how you checked accuracy. This gives you something concrete to discuss in an interview, even before you have used the skill at work.
Label practice honestly
A possible structure is: Practice project: built a stock tracker using tables and formulas, then checked totals and duplicate entries. Use that wording only if you actually completed those steps. Do not invent a percentage saving, an employer or a business outcome. Keep course completion separate from claims about professional experience.
Take the evidence back to your CV
Choose one or two relevant examples rather than listing every function you have seen. If a vacancy asks for advanced Excel, compare your abilities honestly and identify what you still need to learn. ApplyWell’s evidence prompt can help organise your own facts; it does not verify proficiency. Use the CV checker to review presentation and role relevance, not to manufacture experience.
